We Unnecessarily Suffer Stress And Disorders Because We Are Victims Of A Lie Perpetrated by Education, Psychology and Health Leaders.
In the January, 2007, tenth anniversary third edition of "Reconnecting With Nature" (Ecopress), Dr. Michael Cohen demonstrates how a vast majority us are victims of a dangerous falsehood perpetrated by Education, Psychology and Health Professionals.
Cohen, an Ecopsychologist, at the Institute of Global Education shows that that our most trusted leaders subject us to the destructive stress and troubles we suffer by emotionally bonding us to an inaccurate early-childhood belief. They fixate us to think that we live on the surface of Planet Earth, and we don't. We live in the Earth, imbedded in its biosphere.
Since 1929, scientists have recognized that Planet Earth includes a biosphere zone that recycles and promotes all life on the planet, including our lives. The biosphere integrates Earth's atmosphere, sunlight, ocean, soil, plants animals and minerals. In mutual support (and reversing of the laws of entropy,) this life community cooperatively diversifies and grows without producing garbage or pollution or our excessive stress and violence.
As exemplified by the purifying and self-correcting flow of the water cycle, throughout the biosphere the grace, balance and restorative powers of natural systems regenerate and maintain the well-being of life. This includes our mental life, our thoughts, feelings and perceptions. Our health, intelligence and happiness depend upon the decontaminating flow of Earth's natural systems through and about us and our mind.
Cohen says, "Because we don't embrace the biosphere as our planetary home, on average we unreasonably detach over 98 percent of our life, thinking and feeling from its natural systems. This extreme disconnection stops the recycling stream of natural systems through our psyche. Our mind stagnates and our reasoning becomes contaminated. Stress escalates and our troubles begin."
Disconnected from natural systems, like a computer unplugged from an electric socket, our thinking is neither able to repair our or its disorders nor re-plug itself. Our thinking is our destiny. It needs help. However, its dysfunctions prevent it from valuing a powerful antidote and preventative for our dilemma.
The remedy we seek is online and in the Organic Psychology of Cohen's "Reconnecting With Nature" and its companion volume "The Web of Life Imperative." The book offers us a sensory science, a practical tool that enables our thinking and feeling to improve by thoughtfully plugging into natural systems, backyard or backcountry.
Most of us know that a short walk in a natural area momentarily renews us as natural systems begin to flow through our mind. Organic Psychology provides us with the means to habitually strengthen and lengthen this process. As we enjoy its benefits in our personal and professional life, we increase our well-being, locally and globally.

An Organic Psychology Report from a Course Participant
I used to live in a cabin in the woods on the high banks of a River in the Northwest Territories of Canada. In front of the cabin, to the right, was a large expanse of sand, sparsley covered with a few shrubs and trees. From there, I had a wondrous view of the river and surrounding forest.
One winter evening, I went out to view the moon and stars. I stood there in awe of the Milky Way and innumerable pinpoints of light. I picked out the major constellations that I knew. Soon the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) appeared in a magnificent display of colour and shimmering light - green and purple and white, mostly. I could feel the cold air on my face (it was around - 30 degrees!) and could see puffs of vapour as I exhaled.
There was virtually no sound at all - a beautiful quiet serenity. The moon seemed so close that I could reach out and touch it. In the clear air, I could see craters and other topography. In the moonlight, I could see the silhouettes of trees of various shapes and sizes. A few feet away I could see individual snow crystals glistening on the branches and twigs of trees and on the tall grasses sticking out of the snow. Then, to raise my head and look into the vast distance of space to see the moon and stars was thrilling. I stood there, spellbound for a long time. Many of my natural systems and senses were energized. I also felt humbled, peaceful, calm, centered; it felt like I was part of a miracle.
I know that these feelings were not learned from a book, a class or from someone else. They were part of my own natural ability to connect to nature through a multitude of inborn natural systems and senses. This felt connection is my birthright, as it is for all of us. This activity enhanced my feelings of self-worth and re-educated the part of me that is not peaceful - that great factory of the mind that continually churns out limited thoughts and stories. For a few moments, that factory was shut down. I learned that peace is possible.
Upon reviewing the reading for Chapter 1 and in light of my experience above, I have the following thoughts to share (I could go on for pages, there is so much wisdom in that essay.)
"With grace, beauty and renewing powers of natural systems missing from our lives, we want and when we want, there is never enough. Greed, vulnerability, frustrations, discontents and anger result" When I think of the sense of stillness and peace I felt during that nature experience, I realize how I much I have missed that and have allowed myself to get caught up in the cycle of "wanting," seemingly endless wanting. At the time of the experience, I had no wants, no anger, no discontents. Now I do because I have allowed my thinking to become disconnected from natural systems and senses again.
I found the description of the 3 ways of knowing (natural sensory; abstract story; and whole thinking) particularly informative. How easy it is to get caught up in abstractions to the point where I think they are reality; I get stressed when I start to identify with these mental formations, stories and movies in my head and forget to do daily reality checks through organic psychology activities. These activities bring me out of my story world and, with increased wisdom, back into the present moment and its peace.
"The fittest are the best co-operators, not the best competitors". This goes against the grain of what biologists and ecologists would say, yet I believe it and it gives me hope for being a healthy person because I consider myself a co-operator rather than a competitor in life.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 95 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
