"That a camp and school program can be successfully based on reconnecting with Nature is important because there is a dire need for it. I always wanted to start a school when I was a kid, because I hated being locked in these unpleasant rooms. Schoolrooms. They could be smelly, cluttered and awkward. I never felt right in institutionalized environments. I wanted to start a Life School. One that honored our emotions and feelings. One where we were outside more than inside. Smelling the fresh air. Talking to the animals and birds. Feeling the sun. I wanted to have freedom to express myself and have fun. When I had it, loneliness, hostility and depression subsided. This is big! I've experienced this many times and it makes me feel that Nature is my savior!
Nobody ever taught how to be in life. All we did, was follow. That little girl is still inside of me and the thought of creating a school excites me and frightens me. I really honor Nature and Diversity and am so honored to be a part of this whole journey with you all. Since completing the PNC activities, I find that I tend to emphasize my similarities with others rather than differences. the whole idea about what we choose to focus on is important. It brings me to being a parent. Focusing on similarities builds rather than diminishes. It always feels nice when someone tells you they feel similar rather than defending why they feel the opposite. I find that what we often feel similar about is that we all can feel differently about many things. I honor that diversity.
I was very sad that my elders, the ones who were my teachers, were showing me untruths and dishonor. The principal of my high school lived in a hotel. A nice hotel, but it was a hotel, for his wife and he had split. He was always trying to be a friend to everyone. He definitely had his favorites. When I was 14, I got pregnant. He took me to get an abortion! He took me and my best friend to the Hospital, told the school we were going on a student counsel trip, took us out for lunch, then dropped us off at the school later for our parents to come pick us up. I was fourteen. Too young to know what to do, although, my first thought was of course I want to have this baby. I always dreamed of having a lot of children and living on the land. But, he said, Samantha, you don't want to end up in the trailer park do you? What would the field hockey team do without you? You are the best athlete our high school has ever seen. Wow, I was a mess. Nature saved me. I spent hours outside sitting by the river out back of our house. The river, the sun, the sound healed me.
The mind is the most powerful tool we have as humans and how we think choreographs how we act. I won't participate in becoming a part of programs that deceive us for the benefit of a buck. As my classmate has demonstrated, this connecting with nature program is a great tool to wake people up out of their "chosen passivity."
