I don' t often sit in the woods south of the house. I tend instead to go off somewhere else. It was so sweet to be there, so quiet and yet so alive, so busy, When I did the connector activity there (with my daughter and a friend who,d been helping me prune apple trees all day), we all noticed/remarked that the simplicity we felt was just this, that even in its busyness, Nature does not feel chaotic, or BUSY, or like commotion. It,s more like peace(ful) in action.
I was glad to be reminded of what is going on while I am in the house. Even when I am inside and looking out on the scene I sat in the midst of, I cannot know the wingbeats and the sweetness of the light on the dead leaves on the ground. But, having had the interlude of becoming part of it, I have the memory spark of it while I am inside, and it will be a reminder to me that, "Oh, I could just slip out there and become invisible for a minute, let myself be washed in that pure uncluttered life. The "turning" there was all the life around our little trio as we sang and looked.
I'm certain that the score of the musical production in the woods south of my house is different now than it was in December; I could definitely feel more insistence and a lighter tone. We reused over 85%of the lumber from 3 houses and two barns we tore down for salvageable materials. We used a solar pathfinder to determine what due south was so we could orient the house that way, and the design has many passive solar elements (lots of glass on the south side, heat absorbing stone inside with a trombe wall. We make our electricity with sun and wind energy. Water is pumped out of the ground with a windmill and feeds by gravity to the house. We used non-toxic paints, stains and floor finishing products; avoided plastic whenever possible as well as foam type insulations in favor of cellulose.
Most of the labor on the house was done completely with hand tools to minimize the use of fossil fuel electricity. We dug all of the 16, 6-foot holes by hand for the footings. We are proud of these choices, but fully aware that ultimately, there have been costs to the environment,s integrity because of them. We are aware that "progress" for us means a certain level of destruction of nature. This is unavoidable. We like to think that we make it up some by planting trees; and keeping our house small; driving fuel-efficient vehicles and car pooling or biking; growing as much of our own food as possible and buying the rest locally or regionally and organically grown.
Still, we DO drive a car, and all of the products we buy had to get to us via fossil fuel. Our daily living footprint, though perhaps smaller than many other Americans, is still a reality.
Why do we use different words for destroying human communities vs. natural communities? Because we are, as a society, incapable of living our kinship with nature. Because Nature is, for most, still "Other" and unknown, it is easy (or easier) to devalue it, in theory and in practice.
