Aching For What So Many Of Us Are Missing
An Organic Psychology Report from a Minnesota Course Participant
I wander north toward the river. On the way I pass through the Norwegian Museum grounds and get stopped by a very large cottonwood. It,s bark textures and longitudinal grooves stand out in the moonlight, and the heartlike leaves glisten. It,s branches move out from the trunk in the shape of a 360degree menorah. The massive circumference of the trunk is an inescapable presence. Looking up, sky through, the leaves-as-stars are doing their own twinkling, very subtle. Angles of the whorl of branches, from below, make for hundreds of sub spaces in the deep upward expanse of the crown. Because of all of the detail and variability, the space unit of COTTONWOOD, becomes BIG SPACE.
If that were all I could have seen, it would have been enough. Turning to my right to follow where a large branch ended, I discovered that it ended entwined with another branch coming from the other direction. Ah! A partner! Sure enough, a twin, whose left half whorl blended with #1,s to form an archway overhead. Step back and you can really see it. Wow, tree friends, holding hands make an arch, a house, a place to dwell in, a sanctuary. I felt I had found a secret, which might not have been as easy to discover in the daylight.
The woman leaving a closet she lived in for 18 years would likely be very anxious, but also curious, as animals like us naturally are. Angles? Certain dimensions? Certain qualitities of light? Colors? Then, to find echoes of those in the outside world--in nature-connected people and natural places.
Animals would help too, especially those with a quiet and unconditionally loving presence.
Oddly, her "disability" may also be the key to her sanity in an insane world. Coming to it with a less-cluttered mind, she would see with a fresh eye. That could be a characteristic that draws yearning people to her who would protect and care for her. And by her clearer eye, she might help use see beyond our trances.
*Like the closeted woman, I was pleased to find the trees making a secure-feeling place for me to come into.
*The same approach I was inclined to consider for the woman is what is effective for horses, who "don't know any better." Acknowledging the fear and reinforcing the curiosity. If they need to run away from the scarey thing, don't fight that. Sooner or later they will get curious, or another horse in the herd will, and that inclination will bring them closer and closer to accepting the fearful whatever.
This morning before I left for work I went out just long enough to see the brilliant dawn colors. Once I got to town, while I was running along the dike before going to the library, I kept about fuschia and blue enveloping sky. I was affected so strongly about that sight. It got me laying on the dew-coated grass on the dike to stretch. It got me wanting to Do More Different and try discarding some of my own set ways. It got me dreading having to go inside. It got me aching for what so many of us are missing by hiding so much inside, thinking it's the only place to be. The closet got bigger and bigger, enveloping collective mind.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 95 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
