Therapeutic Awareness of Self as Nature
An Organic Psychology Report from a Costa Rica Course Participant
I did not get the chance to do this activity as it was written on the book. However, I spent a week as a therapist with a group of ten people (seven of them students and three staff) kayaking around the Golfo Dulce (sweet gulf) in the south pacific waters of Costa Rica. Our goal was to get to know coral reefs, mangroves and the ocean life in general, but more than that, our goal was to focus on self awareness. We wanted to explore our awareness of our surroundings, awareness of our relationships as well as our awareness of our self. We started by talking about what being aware meant, students mentioned several interesting things such as paying attention to what's going on in the moment, thinking about the consequences of our actions and so on. We then talked about how we are aware; we talked about our feelings and our sensations being the main means of awareness, about there being many senses (not only five) to help us interact with the world, others and our self.
Next morning we were far away from civilization. We were moving in water, dolphins and turtles swam around us; scarlet macaws and holler monkeys entertained our sense of sound. In a couple of days nature had penetrated our skin and we were rhythmically dancing with it. Even those who struggled with the presence of ants and bugs around them ended up being better at handling their presence. We would stop at beaches and islands along our imaginary path to explore the area and just do our thing. People would fish for dinner, snorkel, play with crabs, swim, etc. At night we would sit together and reflect on what we became aware of; as we shared what we became aware of about ourselves, others and the environment we became one giant sentient self. This became our culture: to heighten our self awareness and help others do the same.
Our last morning we woke up two hours before sunrise and got in the water; it was an amazing experience to paddle at night, every time the paddle touched the water, the luminescent plankton would appear out of nowhere. Then the sun started to show up, and the sky filled up with amazing colors and shapes of clouds.
I noticed the change in me when I finished the experience. I had spent a week experiencing an abundance of connections/sensations; I was and still am full of webstrings, like Dr. Cohen calls them. I reawakened my senses and hence my ability to connect. I brought this back home and have been really connected in all aspects of my life these days: intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, socially; I feel connected. I am able to connect to music, to other people's feelings, to the rain, much more easily. I was able to feel this change to much also because I had been sick with a really bad flu before I went on this trip; this flu had made me withdrawn not only physically but in all aspects of me. Going on this trip reawakened me and I could see how it reawakened the young man I work with.
The abilities I located in this natural area:
Water: life giving
Ceiba (type of tree): old and wise
I can see how at times I have these abilities as I am part of nature, even being old and wise, perhaps compared to a new born child.
I learned that extended contact with nature is healing and the best feelings in me come from good connection. I discoverd that making an effort to increase awareness of self, surroundings and others helps reawaken connections (webstrings).
I get good feelings from connectedness. I enjoy seeing my group bond and feel good in nature. I am a person who gets good feeling from vibrating in nature.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 95 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
