Dirty Natural History
An Organic Psychology Report from a Course Participant in Canada.
Since my daughter was born she has always had relationships with spiders. We have found 4 in the house these last 2 days. When spiders show up, our elders saw it is grandmother spider asking us to be aware, to take care of the relationships we weave... or have woven.
This activity helps me recognize that all the "dirty (sic) words" I can think of of were in relationship to nature. Most were related to sexual parts, or related to sex. What I noticed was that all of these beautiful natural, sensual, creative things about nature were made ugly, dirty (sic), immoral, etc. I couldn't help notice that most of these words made reference to the female nature.
What comes to mind for me here is the "dirty" history of the land I'm living on. I moved here thinking this valley was always inhabited by settlers and farmers with the Aboiginals neighboring in the smarter fishing and wildlife lands. There is so much pride in the non-native history here, mostly Dutch or Germans with almost a complete separate identity from the aboriginal people... so unlike the Queen Charlotte Islands where we lived before with the Haida. Together... in unity.
A brother of mine has taken the Aboriginal support worker position at the local high school and brought an old story (true) to life on stage. I didn't know, prior to this play that his people were burned out of there cabins along the Mountain road so the settlers could live here in their place. The families who did this still live in the valley. The families that were made homeless are now the familiar drunks/addicts of our small downtown core.
Before performing this play with the aboriginal high schools students my friend was asked by the mayor to keep the names out. He chose not to. I think of Hitler, of course, in this cruel act. The slavery of African (Americans), and, the Indian Act in the attempts to "assimilate" the Canadian Indians. But I also think of how control and abuse has kept wives, husbands and children victimized in our own communities... more often than we know.
I began my healing journey. I became an advocate of victims of abuse in my career. Now I use nature to support men who abuse and who have no resources to heal in our communities. I want to help them. I support men's circles, as well as womens, confidentiality and humility.
"I'd never thought about dirty words before" - hmmmmm. "Most filthy words we use describe natural acts. This seems far worse that calling black people "niggers"
I don't like to think of myself this way". What I've learned is I see my nature separation in many ways... but the ways that have been healed just needs a bit more confidence to speak out without feeling odd. This is mostly felt in the work I have chosen to do... so now I need to either teach Organic Psychology when I am able or surround myself with community of like minders... so "odd-ness" doesn't deter me.
