My Deep Heartfelt Relationship
An Organic Psychology Report from a California Course Participant
For this activity I went to a friend,s property that borders a small river, the West Fork of the Russian River. My friend works in San Francisco and only comes up on weekends to stay on the land. The property was a junkyard when he bought it and he and I spent many weekends cleaning up the assortment of garbage, junk, cars and trash. Before he purchased the property he asked me to visit and give him an opinion on if I thought it was worth buying. When I saw it I saw it as if the garbage and junk were not there and the land was clean and healthy. I told him to buy the property that it was wanting him to buy it and clean it up. He put in an offer considerably smaller than what was being asked and it was accepted. The house is a wreck and needs to be dismantled and my friend lives in a camper trailer while staying there. He now realizes how important it is for him that he has the land to come to for sanity and grounding. I am personally involved with fish and wildlife restoration on this river and so a part of the healing of the land. Visiting here is natural and I am welcomed and accepted, the land and I sharing a deep heartfelt relationship.
The day is partly cloudy with occasional showers. A gusty breeze is blowing fresh, crisp spring air and there are wild pea, clover and other wild flowers preparing for their blooming all around, many trees are beginning to leaf and the fruit trees varieties are in pink and white blossom. I first put a heavy wool river sock on my hand and walked around feeling the trees, grasses, flowers, leaves, metal, the ground and rocks. There was a disconnection wearing the sock and I felt the desire for better information, the sensitivity of my fingers quickly becoming apparent. I could feel things with edges, their relative size, very rough, very smooth, points, hard, soft, pressure (friction of hand against grasses, trees, etc.) and general shape. My hand felt warm but numb inside the sock not even feeling the weather.
There was a thistle with long sharp spines growing nearby and I was attracted to feel the leaves and spines. There was no feeling except for the pressure/resistance from the physical body of the plant and the points of the spines. They poked through the sock and into my hand as isolated points of sensation it became painful if I put too much pressure against the spine. I did not like lacking the tactile information and felt deprived that I could not feel an items definition/intricate form. I was aware of being short of feedback from my hands and fingers. This led me to consider the purpose of a hand and how remarkable it is. It is made to feel its environment and is adept at sending that information back to the organism/system that uses it to navigate its domain.
There is something else here as well. It is the ability to witness the body wanting the information, processing the information and then making a decision based on that information. The interesting point is the knowing that there is something else observing this transaction, some other aspect of my-self, my spirit, soul, being, essence, or whatever. My body wanted the information yet the observer wanted to watch the interaction between body/sensation and the thistle. It observed the learning taking place as a professor would watch a class of undergrads, from a position of knowing and subsequent agreement with the lesson learned. To me this "observer is an aspect of my self that is aware of Nature,s wisdom and contains the knowledge I am seeking continual connection to. It would be easy to use labels like higher self, over-soul and spirit body to describe this watcher, but none are necessary if one has a label like Watcher.
The conceptual knowing of a sensation through memory is no substitute for feeling the sensation in the moment

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 95 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
