I let myself be led to small park and was immediately drawn to a special Eucalyptus mini grove of 5 trees. It felt as if the trees were waiting for me. I thanked the trees for being there for me and asked if I could learn from them. There was an immediate sense of "absolutely" before I finished my thought, as if they expected me!
The Eucalyptus, a native of Australia, is one of my favorite three trees. I gravitated to the largest tree whose trunk was more than 5 feet across. Its 5- foot-wide trunk was split 5 feet from the ground up into two separate trunks, symbolizing to me a male and female aspect of oneness. The bark was totally stripped, and it was marked with carvings of names and images. At first I was aghast, feeling a surge of anger at unruly kids (supposedly) unconsciously abusing this gentle mass. But I felt no anger or sadness from the tree-only acceptance. It didn't judge my anger either.
I questioned how it must feel being situated (stuck, to me) between the bathrooms in a brick building about 12 feet away and the playground with metal and plastic equipment two feet away. Every day that area is filled with the activity of kids and parents. I sensed from the tree that it was living FOR the people, not in spite of.
I scratched a leaf gently and smelled the typically Eucalyptus scent. Felt it's slick and nubby texture. It reached to the sky with its "fluffy" leaves as if it were 5,000 feet tall instead of only 50 or so feet. It seemed to be penetrating into the heavens, the sky that was half filled with stars, half with a white cloudy haze. The tree seemed humble and full of pride at the same time. This giant wizard generously let itself be a symbol of creativity (the carving), a statement of love, or an outlet for pent up feelings. I thanked it for sharing it's intelligence with me. I will enjoy recalling this visit as I see this tree and its neighbors from my office window at the end of the park! It is a reminder of nature's detachment, acceptance, mutual support and integrity.
My experience in Nature showed me that I am a person who gets good feelings from connecting with all living things using many senses and sensibilities."
