At One With Attractions in Nature
An Organic Psychology Report from a Arizona Course Participant
Charlie and I took our dog, Bette, out into the desert for an evening hike and to explore the observation that attractions in nature make us feel good. We were very attracted to this area near the base of Peralta trail. Very pristine, except for the litter one occasionally sees. The day was beautiful and calm. I just needed to get out of this city. The natural attraction felt soooo good and restful. Bette, has hiked mountains and deserts with us however at 11 1/2 we had noticed she was definitely slowing down.
I noticed in the desert surroundings as well as outdoors anywhere she was teaching me about attraction to nature. She sees everything, sniffs everything and is aware on a level I cannot even comprehend. While watching her lying on the iron red desert clay she seemed to disappear into the earth. She blended with nature. I blinked and wondered what had happened--what did I just witness. She was one with the earth. This may sound kind of woo woo but I really don't have any words to describe it.
I learned if my dog is part of nature and that connected then biologically and psychologically, I must be too. Being in the desert, the plants and animals are in a harsh environment and send very clear signals about staying away--if we ignore our natural senses, then the desert becomes a very unsafe place. This activity taught me to respect my natural surroundings and enjoy sensing natural connections. I am learning to tell the difference in other areas of my life and to synthesize what I am learning. I have been around people and just felt an innate sense of "something is not right" for me. Or have met someone for the first time and felt a friendship and kinship with them.
Having this feeling taken away would not benefit me. I am still having difficulty adjusting to being in the city. I try and somedays it is easier, but it is too much for my senses. Nature based thinking allows me to literally survive as I focus on the trees, cactus and plants along the freeways. My self worth is definitely higher when connected to natural surroundings.
In his email, Vic said "Animals amaze me. I see people drive past with dogs and cats in their cars who are totally oblivious to anything but what is in their mind at the time, but the animals never fail to see me and make eye contact. The only exception is if their attention is riveted on something in the other direction. Animals are aware of their surrounding environment and what is in it, they are ultimately curious (as we should be) and they meet life nose first, head on and without reservation. If natural attractions make life feel good, think of what our nature-separated lives are missing."
