Project NatureConnect Self-Regulating Applied Ecopsychology Training DEGREE AND COURSE PROCESS: OUR ONLINE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT EXPEDITION A SELF-REGULATING INFORMATION SHARING PROCESS Throughout its history since 1945, "Project NatureConnect" programs have self-directed and regulated themselves via community meetings that include the best thinking of leaders and participants. Together, they have shared their thoughts and feelings to make sensible decisions about the most rewarding way to make their day, program or life happen. This attractive exchange of information is the same, cooperative, self-organizing process by which nature works. Moment by moment, non-verbally, nature's attraction essence conspires to grow and sustain its self-correcting and balanced ways. On our courses, in natural areas backyard to backcountry, people of all ages share their natural attraction thoughts and feelings. This gives their natural senses the time and place to express themselves, to listen and be heard in conjunction with authentic nature. This is a core of the online degree, course and certificate programs of Project NatureConnect at the Institute of Global Education and the Akamai University Applied Ecopsychology Institute. "One
of the best parts about this program and its insights is to naturally
bring about an internal shift to live in a community way where
others have the space to transform and have a similar
shift. Spreading the gift of wholeness is a life long
pursuit of being in the present moment so as to create a deepening
connection to life that is happening now for others to share." COURSES The published description of the MS by Project and Ph.D. by Dissertation university 40 credit requirements is listed at http://ecopsych.com/akamaiMS.html The courses listed in sequence with respect to certification and degrees are on the Courses and Calendar page. Study this page carefully. It describes the structure of the program you will customize for yourself. http://www.ecopsych.com/communityprocesscalendar.html DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORY: In 1968, Dr. Michael J. Cohen's environmental education program became a year long accredited outdoor expedition traveling classroom, the Trailside Country School. This occurred because Cohen translated and published as courses the knowledge that was gained from the school community as it self-designed and implemented its own nature-connected curriculum in natural areas across the U.S.A. The process it developed enabled its students to co-create ideal living and learning relationships in conjunction with natural areas. Cohen's translation of the program became descriptions and syllabi of courses in Biology, Natural History, Psychology, Group Dynamics, Anthropology etc. The school became the National Audubon Society Expedition Institute in 1978. Its courses were published in catalogs and, in time, accredited by the University of the State of New York and Lesley University Graduate School. They were accepted in over 1500 college and university degree programs. At this time (1968), Ecopsychology had not been "invented." Cohen's course that came closest to applying Ecopsychology was entitled "An Objective Search for Mother Earth." The programs were based on learning how to genuinely connect with nature as community, to be able to register and consciously think and feel with the renewing flow of our living Earth, in and around us. ...."Through
natural attraction sensations and feelings that were energized into
consciousness through sensory contacts in natural areas, young or old,
students and staff alike learned to respect the web-of-life community
and themselves. Nature taught them to enjoy, validate and incorporate
the self-correcting wisdom of the web in their thinking and feeling.
The National Audubon Society identified this program as the most revolutionary school in America and selected it to be an Audubon program out of 116 programs that were considered for sponsorship. In the Trailside/Audubon programs:
- Cohen, Michael J. Integrated Ecology: The Process of Counseling With Nature, American Psychological Association, The Humanistic Psychologist Vol 21, August 1993 Something important to think about: Are the experts, below and elsewhere, incorrect in their observations of this program and its values? Or, instead, do we suffer because Industrial Society has destructively strayed from the tools offered by the study of applied ecopsychology, tools that help us live in peaceful balance with nature, in and around us? "The
activities work, they move students. I see significant improvement in
their self-esteem and value. They find something outside themselves
that is actually a truth within themselves." - Mark Walsh Director of Wilderness Therapy, Hyde Psychiatric Hospital "Contains a strong sense of commitment to bed rock values and to the human spirit...a willingness to live out beliefs, to experience life...a system of thinking that can be very very useful for many people who have never given much thought to their place in the cosmic order... a way to feel connected to the universe and strengthen a sense of personal identity." - Maria West, M.S.W., Counselor "How important Project NatureConnect's guidebooks, workshops and activities have been to us. Its straightforward, unembroidered perceptions are as refreshing and clear as a mountain lake. It's a joy, for it unifies rather than polarizes. It effectively speaks to modern problems with modern knowledge, skills and language." - Nancy McMinnon The Gowland Foundation, Victoria, British Columbia. "It's great. He's s right to make the responsibility for living on good terms with Gaia a personal one." - Dr. James Lovelock, Author, Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth "Mike Cohen has instilled in his students an awareness of nature and its workings that few will come close to in years of concentration." - Jim Hart, Naturalist, U.S. National Park Service "Its impact lies in the fact that the author has lived its wisdom of these past twenty years... I have learned first had that its theories prove themselves in the fruition that its education delivers. It offer the medicine that disillusioned humanity and the endangered environment needs." - Herb AlF, Ed.D. President, Environment Talent Inquiry and Development
APPLICATION Today, the cooperative community learning process, described above, continues in the Project NatureConnect distant learning course and degree program. The courses and the degree requirements are published, recognized and approved as are any other university graduate or undergraduate classroom courses and degrees. However, the course work is learned and achieved, online, through the unique natural attraction ecology shared learning process, described above. Using the Internet instead of meeting in person, the means of educating, counseling and healing with nature parallel the self-organizing, cooperative group, hands-on, mentor process that made Cohen's expedition education programs work so successfully. "I
appreciate this program from the bottom of my heart. It helps me bridge
the love of nature and life itself that has cradled me since birth with
my work as a therapist. And it provides a workable translation of
Indigenous healing that my elders taught, to my clients and students.
It is accessible and doable for everyone! I love the way the program
itself is an organism that is whole, alive, gentle and kind. Thanks for
being here, everyone."
- L.O.W. All the faculty at IGE Project NatureConnect are also faculty at Akamai University. In the online Akamai Applied Ecopsychology Institute program, students and faculty learn how to think like nature works by doing and sharing nature-connection activities, backyard or backcountry. The activities enable them to create moments that let Earth teach and let nature help people heal. It is their sensory contact with nature's flow, in themselves, others and the natural environment, that does the teaching. Grades are assigned to the published courses. However, the grades are earned by evaluating the degree of excellence and cooperation that the student has displayed while working with the total community course participation, academics and administrative processes of the Institute. The key to mastering our nature-connecting courses or degrees by Internet and email is that each individual, painstakingly, makes sure to obtain consent for their efforts from their classmates and from the total Institute student, guide and mentor community. Over the Internet, their words communicate what their thoughts and feelings are experiencing, how they are acting, and what they plan to do. These understandings are then actualized, or they are modified and further consented to by the online community when plans or experiences change. "I
have noticed since co-facilitating three courses and doing my own
course work, plus contact on the cooperative community groups, that PNC
creates a startlingly, overwhelmingly positive and happy group of
people! I don't think I have ever - in all my years as a
therapist, trainer, teacher of supposedly peace enhancing and happiness
producing endeavors - seen this much happiness, peace, delight,
kindness, good will and NNIAL
- especially NNIAL and in a very accessible form - dancing around the
pages and lives of this many people. Thanks!!!!" - L.W. DEGREE COMPLETION Students officially matriculate into the degree granting University program when their course work is completed. This is accomplished through a recommendation and transcript by the faculty and students in the Student Cooperative at the Institute. It is based on the student's involvement with the total process of cooperatively operating and administering the Institute as well as completion of their course work. This learning-by-doing is experiential. Many of the cooperative program commitments are parts of a course on how to make and fulfill these commitments as part of the program's learn by experience operation. A benefit of this process is that it keeps tuition fees about 85 percent lower than degrees obtained elsewhere. Without exception, students who have been recommended by the PNC program for matriculation into the degree program have very successfully completed their degrees. "The
investment to my degree(s) is definitely an enormous benefit not only
in
the incalculable personal knowledge and growth it provided but
professionally as well. Now that I have an active psychotherapy
practice it has become an enormous professional advantage.
1. I am much better equipped to help my clients by using NSTP principles and the primary underpinning for my work. 2. I am more confident and assured as a therapist so I enjoy my work now immensely. I always look forward to seeing my clients. Clearly these first two are directly related. 3. The world is infinitely more receptive to me as a PhD applied ecopsychologist. Even though I am not a “licensed” psychologist, and never claim to be, just the word and the three little letters open doors and provide credibility that my Applied Ecopsychology ability alone can never attain. This is perhaps not at is should be per se, but it is certainly a marvelous asset." -

Description of the Participation
Process: I
enrolled because I
discovered that my friend was meeting the goal of co-creating with nature while he was a Personal Life
Coach; he was trained in, and using this Project NatureConnect Applied Ecopsychology online program. From
my visits to the
homepage and my phone calls, I was very sure this course would make
sense to to me because I looked into the details of its history and
results. I accomplished this by obtaining and read the trade published version of its e-book
Educating, Counseling and Healing with Nature. After
I completed a
course, as part of the program I was given the opportunity to
co-facilitate another section of the course so I had experience of
teaching courses on my own as part of the program. I am now working on facilitating a program that will be part of Nurses Training here. This will enable people on the hospital staff to add applied ecopsychology to their talents and Organic Psychology. They will be able to obtain a degree in this combination if they want one. The impact and need to learn and teach this Natural Attraction Ecology process is tremendous. Any civilization worth the name should pay its citizens to master this program, just as any responsible business has in-service training for its employees to achieve excellence in meeting its goals. -
