LOVE OF NATURE
"I have a deep love for nature and I am so distressed
to see how we as a culture and world are going. I'm doing what
I can in small ways, and it seems so important for many others
to take up the challenge to live as if we were all nature. To
that end I am currently offering sustainable living study circles,
organizing cultural creative gatherings and writing for our small
newspaper on sustainability. I'm a holistic psychotherapist and
artist living in Rhode Island, mother of 3 grown children."
"I teach Psychology courses and direct a program
that offers multiple levels of care to patients seeking treatment
for chemical dependency and mental health problems. Throughout
my career in human services I have studied human behavior and
provided counseling to numerous clients. I continually look for
new theories, techniques and treatments that benefit patients
because I see such a small number of patients who are actually
succeeding in their treatment programs for addiction, depression,
anxiety etc. Since many patients seem to feel better when in
our garden areas, I'm interested in discovering why and how this
can make a contribution to wellness."
"As a former environmental chemist and wildlife
biologist, I found interconnectedness and real feeling lacking
in the purely scientific fields. When I studied psychology, I
found it to be focused far too often on mental activities. I
was raised in a native family that found friendship, comfort,
solace, and spirituality in the natural world. As I switched
fields to to find that combination, I was consistently disappointed.until
I discovered your degree program. It seems to embody exactly
what I have been looking for. I've done some facilitating of
experiences with nature on my own, as well as story telling,
music for healing nature, music for the dying, writing gardening
books and writing fantasy stories. I try my best to reconnect
children with the natural world; to help them connect to nature
and stay healthy and feel safe and empowered."
"It is my goal to utilize my business experience
and education to facilitate an understanding of our natural world:
to preserve the beauty of nature by showing people their place
in and connection to their natural environment; to create beauty
where it is not. My goal is that their newfound knowledge will
inspire them towards action, which will perpetuate a sustainable
future for the earth. As an entrepreneur, I am dedicated to sound
business practices based on ecological principles. How could
I not be attracted to a program that embodies everything that
I seek to do with my life. I always welcome new methods and understanding
that will enable me to meet my goals. I have wanted to DO something
with nature to help myself and others but wasn't sure how that
would play out until I discovered that training to educate and
counsel with nature was available."
"When I became active with the Girl Scouts and
reintroduced-introduced to nature and the outdoors I realized
that I had missed so much in my past 27 years by staying indoors.
At times my connection with nature feels like my only source
of sanity because it truly has kept me grounded working in my
stressful occupation. I began to understand that all we need
to survive is provided to us by nature, and we should learn to
reconnect with our Mother Earth. I also began to understand the
extent of the damage, we, as a society, have made to Nature and
how we need to join together in this fight to save her. The Natural
Systems Thinking Process website showed me how to further my
reconnection-connection to Our Mother. I hope to continue to
regain my love and appreciation for our Earth, and would like
to actively try to help her plight against pollution and over-production."
"I have had no formal college training yet I have
done well with a variety of jobs and hobbies that have taught
me many things during the past fifteen years. I read the book,
Reconnecting With Nature and its activities have brought me closer
to myself. By that I mean the real me, the me before the cultural
assault changed me to make me a "civilized" consumer.
I feel much more at peace and connected to the universe now.
I feel like an active participant in all of life and very connected
to all life on this planet. My level of gratitude for my very
existence has increased as well as my gratitude for all the living
beings that have consented to grace my life. All of these feelings
are so important to me and I want to continue that. My ideal
job would be to help others connect with themselves and their
purpose through nature. I am glad to see you have a Bachelors
waiver for people like myself who have equivalent life experience."
ARTS AND HUMANITIES
"As a college student interested in human development,
when I was a camp counselor I worked with my campers in the various
programs the camp offered. At times they would have the opportunity
to do art, music or creative writing in natural settings at the
camp or while they were on hiking or canoe trips. I became fascinated
with nature when I noticed that the artwork, music or writing
the campers did was easier, more fun and more creative than when
done in the camp buildings. They related better to each other,
too, in Nature. Whether it was the atmosphere of the group or
the natural area I don't know, but I fell in love with teaching
and learning outdoors and continue to do this at the park near
the school where I presently work."
"While I grew up attending church I always felt
a deeper spiritual connection when surrounded by nature. My soul
has been indelibly touched by a sense of wilderness from my years
living close to natural areas. The landscape has defined my character.
Only by recapturing the rhythms of nature will humankind ever
be able to return to a state of grace. For far too long we have
attempted to live outside of nature, attempted to conquer her,
considered her our ward rather than our parent. For souls such
as mine, it is not progress man has achieved but desecration.
The natural world is our connection to the universe. We can not
continue to disgrace that which spawned us. I have come to realize
that I would like to change careers and some how help people
to help themselves and the environment. If people are not happy
in their lives, with their work etc. they will not take action
to protect the environment."
"Working at different
camps with a variety of children from various cultures I was
amazed how different children reacted when they where in contact
with nature . That sparked an interest in me as to how big of
an influence being outside and in contact with nature has on
humans, specifically children. Because I had to borrow $25,000
for school last year, I got myself involved in Corporate Sales
and got sucked in to the discrete vortex that the corporate world
creates for so many people! Thankfully I am presently unemployed.
I finally picked up your book I bought a year and a half ago.
It stirred the fires of passion that burn in me! That passion,
my passion is to wrap my mind around questions about the
human psyche and its healing relationship with nature."
"After taking the orientation course, I found
that I loved the activities and my paradigm about nature has
been changed in a positive manner. I grew up in an impoverished
neighborhood surrounded by emotional, physical, and sexual abuse
and neglect. I began to abuse alcohol and drugs at age 10, culminating
18 years later after severe cocaine use and 7 drug related criminal
arrests. Now I have Masters in Social Work and I have worked
as an activist for empowerment practices within the substance
abuse / mental health field. I want to open a creative, nature-connected
recovery retreat and healing center. I plan to have people from
all walks of life thanking my program for helping them to rekindle
their relationships with others, themselves, and the environment."
