THE GARDEN HELPS ME GIVE UP THE RAT RACE

An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant

I put on my coat to head to the beach, and realize I am not attracted to go there today. Instead of forcing myself, I asked my body where it would like to go to do the activity and was given the answer, the therapy from horticulture the garden.

My apartment block has a couple of small gardens with trees in the backyard, and the flowers are starting to bloom. There are some beautiful tulips, bluebells, and daffodils just outside the backdoor, and this is where I am attracted. I wonder if the flowers will give me permission, and before I am even out my door I get a "most definitely."

Just inside the apartment block are five potted plants and they call to me as well. I begin to pull on one leaf, and realize they are all dusty, and as I start rubbing away the layers of dust on the leaves, I feel how cool and sensual these plants are. They are very beautiful underneath their layers of dust. They shine, they seem happier. I receive a definite thank you for cleaning them.

Outside I am attracted to the therapy of green trees, red tulips and purple bluebells. The tulips give the direct impression that I am not to pull to hard, as they wish to stay attached to the earth. The bluebells tell me the same, they want to stay attached to that which supports and nourishes them (they had no name for the earth; they only mentioned the relationship they had!). I also pull on the bluebells long leaves, covered in raindrops; they are cool, slender, and flexible. I pull harder, and the tip of one leaf comes off. I say I am sorry, the plant says that is ok, when you push or pull on yourself to hard you sometimes hurt yourself. This is a perfect lesson for me, as I work to balance work, school, business, workouts, horticulture and a social life. I love how each nature activity reflects where I am and how it mirrors back to me the lesson I need to learn, or be reminded of that day as a garden. It is always perfect. This is my "new brain" expressing that it is reasonable to let nature's wisdom enter and through its horticulture help balance our runaway relationships. Organic Psychology simply asks the new brain to be reasonable and make space to let the wisdom of natural senses feelings and therapy contribute to our lives.

From this activity I discovered that it is good to honor my body's attractions, as well as my own thought attractions and that reconnecting with nature through horticulture or otherwise is a process not easily described to others, but easily understood once one participates. This helped me recognize that it's OK to have balance in my life. Like a tree, I don't have to push so hard.

This garden experience in nature shows me that I am a person who gets good feelings from following my body's attractions to nature, being open to the theraputic lessons trees offer me and touching beautiful tulip plants and flowers. The authorities I carry with me in my mind continued their re-education from this Organic Psychology study. They were very quiet today and this helped me honor myself by following my attractions. They lead to wonderful lessons.

Later, I sit with a pear in full bloom, white flowers covering each long branch that loom and bob high into the sky like soft, fluffy streamers on a Mardi Gras float. Connecting with nature is a reward in itself, a direct sensory reward of pleasure and peacefulness, and appreciation of nature's intelligence and elegance. The effects of rewards certainly effected my development as a child. I learned things for the joy of learning, until I experienced the rewards of getting the highest scores - then I learned for the sake of winning the praise of adults, not for learning alone. I have given up the rat race, and now observe the rat pathways through the plants in my yard. What's the secret life of these little critters that scurry down their covert pathways when my dogs come running?

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

-Stephen Aizenstat

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.

-Michael J. Cohen
