NOTE:

This page offers valuable rewards to individuals who recognize four basics of Organic Psychology:

1. We are part of nature and it sustains the global life community without producing our garbage, disorders or abusiveness.

2. Natural systems pervade nature and are self-correcting. They recycle, purify and nurture wherever they flow.

3. We excessively suffer our disorders because we don't connect with nature's grace, balance and restorative powers to help us remedy our troubles.

4. We spend, on average, 98 percent of our life indoors, separated from nature. To our loss, our thinking and feeling are extremely disconnected from nature's healing ways.

CHOOSING AN APPROPRIATE BALANCE

An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant

I went to a little 'patch of wild' at the fringe of a local park where I like to sit on a large stone in the middle of a small stream. As I entered the area asking for permission to play, I was awash with a sense of welcome. I would even go so far as to call it a tingly, sparkly, happy welcome! I took my seat upon the stone, sat and sang a melody I like to call my soul song to the stream, trees, stones, etc. The stone agreed to play with me, so I put a thick glove on one hand and wrapped it up with a scarf.

I began to caress the stone with both hands. First with my eyes closed, then not. I realized that I would not even know what I was touching with the covered hand while my eyes were closed, if I didn't already know. How easily I could be fooled into thinking it was almost anything, I thought. I only knew it was big and hard with that hand. My exposed hand felt the rough, hard surface, its little indentations, bumps, edges, coolness, even dampness. There was a thick, soft, fuzzy, damp texture over the edge on the side. Beautiful moss in deep, dark green nearest the rock's surface, tipped with the brightest, happiest light green shining like mini sunspots at the tippy top of each treelike furry end.

My exposed hand felt so much more free, alive, and yes, happy. The was the subtlest movement of air caressing the back of my hand as I explored the sides of the stone near the water's surface.

My insulated hand just knew hardness, and direction. It was warmer than the other hand, but I was sensing disappointment, even sadness because of its limited sense of the experience.

My being was connected more acutely to the sensations of my exposed hand, and wanted that for and from the other hand. I also realized the covered hand could not feel the moss and was therefore less gentle in its exploration of those areas, even somewhat destructive because of its lack of awareness, until I opened my eyes.

I discovered that comfort and discomfort are not so easily defined. Each has degrees of different and similar qualities at the same time. Protection from the elements doesn't mean protection for the elements. Protection is not as useful or essential as much as we tend to think, nor does it allow us to be fully informed or pleased.

Sometimes insulation serves our survival. Being exposed frees us to feel more alive and engaged. Choosing an appropriate balance that provides secure survival while favoring sensational interaction is more satisfying than having emphasis on protective insulation. When the emphasis is placed on insulation/protection, it is based on some level of fear. Sometimes that's a healthy, good thing. But, its so overdone too often.

I feel delighted, inside and out, by allowing myself to be more exposed. The world and I effect each other more intimately. This uplifts my spirit, and I can't help but think that my joy nourishes what's around me through energetic exchange. My self-worth is enhanced because I choose to honor the value of purposeful, informed exposure, thus raising my awareness of my self, my world, my joy.

I like this place because it's an easily accessible, peaceful sanctuary amidst the chaos of urban existence.

I like myself because I am an easily accessible, peaceful sanctuary amidst the chaos of urban existence.

This feels good and right to say and feel. It reflects my place, my work, what I can offer to myself and those people who come to me for comfort. It is not static though. It requires my awareness, attention and intention. Taking care of myself, which includes connecting with nature, is necessary so I may better care for those who come to me for care.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

-Stephen Aizenstat

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.

-Michael J. Cohen
