THE NATURAL MIND: TO SEE AND FEEL WITH GREEN PLANT EQUALITY

An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant

I have done breathing exercises in connection with trees and plants many times but there was still a new fresh feeling in this activity.

I first breathed in connection with the environment as a whole. Then I chose a flower pot of peppermint plants to connect directly with. While looking at the peppermint plants and breathing, I came to appreciate my eyes, suddenly I see my ability to see and this helped me see more attentively. The greenness of the leaves drew me in and I admired their beauty, the beauty of the greenness, the shape of the leaves and plants in their variety and oneness. I felt at one with the peppermint plants. I was doing this just looking at the plants. Then I repeated the process while holding one of the plants. This added to the message from my eyes. There was solidarity in my connection to the plants but I felt better and more expansive while in a visual basic connection without holding onto it.

I brought the pot still nearer but the experience was not as good as the first experience. I then placed the pot back a bit higher about level with my eyes (as it was previously) and the experience this time was better (similar to that of the first). The difference was that the pot in the second attempt was lower than my eye level and I seemed to be looking down on it (physically speaking) and could not see the plants fully. When I placed the pot at eye level, the feeling was much better and I could see the plants and their bark more fully. The connection and feeling were better, perhaps the connection was more a more intimate relationship, the arrangement or setting more conducive to a feeling of equality and respect. We were equals and it felt right.

I then placed the pot back in its original place and breathed in connection with the scenery or environment as a whole , the trees and other plants. It seems to go well and the exchange of mutual nurturing brought peace and contentment, relaxation.

In my mind's eye, I felt a deeper sense of the worth of the plants and nature. I felt more care, connected and at one. Peppermint tea and candy will no doubt have greater meaning to me from now on.

When I was breathing with the peppermint plants, I was surprised by the peppermint oil smell of plants and I stayed with the smell and continued to enjoy it. I was receiving oxygen with the added reward of the peppermint smell which further refreshed me.

I felt thankfulness, appreciation, a little bit of a sense of healing, greater consciousness of my breathing and liking the breathing I was doing and am doing while typing. I felt thankful to the plants, to nature and to God.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

-Stephen Aizenstat

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.

-Michael J. Cohen
