AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE OUTCOME: INCREASED PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WELL-BEING
Because the Natural Systems Thinking Process (NSTP) enables people to create moments that let Earth teach, it is a unique sensory-thinking form of learning and healing that is sought as a keynote conference topic. Its inventor, Environmental Educator, Michael J. Cohen, Ed.D. demonstrates that it is an organic form of psychology that helps nature recycle our short-circuited thinking. His nature-connecting tool works by enabling an individual to unblock the flow of natural systems through their psyche and benefit from their restorative powers . (www.ecopsych.com).
Cohen's process enables our thinking and feeling to overcome the misguided socializations we suffer, socializations that prevent us from adequately sustaining personal and environmental well-being.
In planning a conference, administrators may invite Dr. Cohen to help conference participants personally and professionally benefit from the application of Organic Psychology. However, Cohen, a director of the Institute of Global Education, offers conference administrators an alternative that empowers them to more effectively meet this goal. He helps them identify and support conference attendees who show an interest in learning how to incorporate Organic Psychology in their life or livelihood. As part of the conference proceedings, these individuals receive grants from the Institute of Global Education to use methods and materials that enable them to participate in organic psychology training courses and degree programs during and after the conference.
The outcome of this approach is that the funds that would ordinarily bring Dr. Cohen to the conference to introduce Organic Psychology, would help those who are interested in it to master and teach it. This makes sense. Conference and grant funds are used directly for increasing well-being rather than for transportation, hotel accommodations and a stipend for Dr. Cohen. Conference sales of Organic Psychology materials have also supported the conference budget.
"If we are going to change for the better," says Cohen, "We must walk our talk and offer our society sensible alternatives. Organic Psychology is one such alternative. A conference that enables people to help its members and the world benefit from Organic Psychology is another.
"For example," he said, "when the inventors of energy saving light bulbs introduced them to the public twenty years ago (1986), they demonstrated at several conferences, where Cohen keynoted, that by using these bulbs our nation and the world could dramatically reduce our demands for energy and improve the environment.
Cohen notes, "As part of the conference, my suggestion to these inventors was that in addition to making the bulbs available, they should incorporate an Organic Psychology that would increase the public's consciousness and desire to want to use these wonderful bulbs. If the inventors did not do this, people would continue to have ingrained economic, lifestyle and other conflicts about the bulbs. People would be unmotivated and apathetic. They would not change, they would not use the bulbs."
History shows that the Organic Psychology was not incorporated in the light bulb campaign. Consciousness and motivation were not increased and conflicts were not resolved. Today, two decades later, energy saving bulbs do not predominate every home, school and office as they could and should. Instead, we suffer additional troubles and stress brought on by energy shortages, global warming along with addictive wants and feelings of helplessness. Most folks believe that our lives are form of madness, that there is little hope. All this increases the stress and anxiety that underlies almost 90 percent of our medical problems.
In an interview for a DVD about his life, Cohen said, "As demonstrated in my books and courses, what is true about our nature-limited consciousness and our conflicts about light bulbs is equally true about most of our other "unsolvable" disorders. Although we have had many sensible alternatives available in the past twenty years, our socialized, nature-separated mentality has ignored them. This has further deteriorated our relationship with ourselves, each other and the environment.
Many excellent remedies for our stressful troubles are available. However, as with the light bulbs, devoid of the grace, balance and restorative powers of nature, our thinking and feeling prevents us from taking advantage of available remedies. This brings to mind that during the Second World War, a millionaire, who lived on an estate near our house, was out digging a Victory Garden in his luxurious lawn just as many of us were digging one in our backyards. He and we were motivated and Victory Gardens, although a great change in lifestyle, made sense to help end the war crisis. For that matter, we also looked forward to eating horse meat and we home-canned garden produce. All this change, including gas rationing and women working in factories, took place within a year or two, yet solidarity increased.
Today's challenge is for us to help each other engage in Organic Psychology and improve our well being before we are further engulfed in social and environmental disorders that we can't stop. By including Organic Psychology as part of its program, any conference, no matter its topic, can make increased personal, social and environmental well-being an outcome and benefit from stress reduction, too."

Help turn the tide!
"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
