THE PSYCHOLOGICAL VALUE OF NEGATIVES IN NATURE
An Organic Psychology Report from an Online Course Participant
The town council said the tree maintenance and danger from the older trees was unacceptable, and although we were unhappy and protested, yesterday they cut them down. After I got over my shock, I went and sat with the remaining trees. I felt I had to ask for their forgiveness on behalf of humans, and then to ask for permission to sit in their presence. It took me awhile to get to that space to sense a natural feel-good attraction, because I felt guilty in their presence. I kept reminding myself it wasn't my fault, and eventually I was able to make the switch from my anger to a happy awareness as I was now able to enjoy the beauty of the newly flowering cherry trees and other blossoming trees that remained. I was able to put these feelings into saying aloud: I am a person who enjoys sensing these natural attractions because of their beauty, which makes me feel good.
I discovered that I am a person who gets good feelings from the natural beauty of my environment as I sit down and rest next to trees and smell the bark and the surrounding grass.
The environment helps me feel good when I notice the warmth of the sun on my skin and the air rustling through the trees. There is a natural attraction to avoid the pollen in the air even as I enjoy the natural time of the seasons change. In the spring everywhere I look everything seems to be come more alive. I still am somewhat angered by the tree removal episode of the last several weeks, and therefore the loss of these good feelings being taken away is still very real. I feel diminished by the impact on my environment. To borrow a phrase from Neil Armstrong, one small disappointment for man, one giant disappointment for mankind.
I see that my the negative feelings and anger can be attractive because they reinforce my desire to keep working towards doing what I can to help turn nature negative thinking into nature supportive thinking on my part as well as those who are also ready or willing to hear or understand it.
The activity brought to my consciousness the part of me that has learned to reject my anger as being bad. It brought to mind a painful memory of my first girlfriend who asked me to never be angry with her, but I couldn't stop when I found she was lying to me. Part of me needs to be re-educated to value my anger as a signal to find some other attraction rather than
be afraid of the anger. Because of traumatic events in my childhood (abandonment), I've learned to live in my head for survival purposes and learned to fear anger because I want closeness and intimacy and my negative feelings prevent me from getting them from others.
I find this whole reconnecting with nature process a complete re-education and healing of my hurt senses when I value them for letting me know I should seek and follow other attractions. They motivate me to find or develop good moments out of a bad one.

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."
In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally receive from natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
