Thinking and Feeling as if Ecology Mattered

History

In February of 1936, Michael, a left-handed, elementary school first grader took issue with the policy of his school about the most reasonable placement of the inkwell on his desk.  The school said one "right-handed place" was correct even though it detrimentally stressed the youngster.  To no avail, from his reasoning and sensory experiences with nature and well-being, he argued that another placement was better.  Frustrated and psychologically injured, for the following seventy-two years Michael explored a remedy for the deterioration of well being that resulted from excessively exploiting nature's ways, in and around us. In 2008, his research qualified him for a Ph.D in recognition of his unique contributions to personal, social and environmental well being that his doctoral work successfully described and defended. His web site
http://www.ecopsych.com contains the rationale, benefits and science of the nature-connected, 53 natural-sense, educating, counseling and healing process he established.

Summary:

Most of us who have enjoyed a good experience in nature sense that we are part of the web of life. Scientific research affirms this feeling.  It shows that our body consists of ten times more cells of other organisms than human cells; over 110 species live on our skin alone and every 2-7 years every atom in us is replaced by atoms from the environment. We are the global ecosystem and it is us.

In order to be part of any system, we must be in communication with the system.  As part of the global ecosystem, we have biologically inherited the ability to communicate with it, and it with us. We suffer because we ignore this ability.

Earth communicates with us, as part of itself, through at least 53 natural senses and sensitivities. For example, our sense/sensation of thirst intelligently "turns on" to attract us to drink water. In addition, when we have enough water, thirst reasonably "turns-off" and attracts us to stop drinking. Each of our additional 52 senses are similar attraction intelligences.  In balanced ways they enhance our natural love and need for community, reason and trust; aroma, place and consciousness; color taste and motion; belonging, beauty and music, along with 41 additional sensory attractions.

Industrial Society's prejudice to conquer or exploit nature socializes us to spend, on average, less than 12 hours of our lifetime thinking and feeling in contact with the renewing and self-correcting callings of nature's grace.  This profound loss of rewarding support from nature leaves us wanting, and when we want there is never enough. We become destructively anxious, excessive and dependent. This deteriorates nature's balance in and around us.

Nature knows how to sustain its optimums of life, diversity, purity and cooperation. It produces minimal garbage, greed and abusiveness and we inherit nature's sensibility. However, our prejudice against nature wounds or enslaves the ability nature to function properly. Our disorders result.

There is a remedy. In natural areas, backyard or backcountry, the science of Applied Ecopsychology teaches us how to reasonably reconnect our thinking to the healing flow of natural systems in and around us.  Backyard or backcountry, we help our mind recycle any garbage or pollution Industrial Society has dumped in our psyche.  By genuinely connecting with nature, our restored natural thoughts and feelings transform our disorders into the well being of nature's peace.

AN INVITATION:

Congratulations for having sought and found Project NatureConnect and the home of Organic Psychology.  We applaud your dedication to solving disorders that deteriorate the well being  of our self, society and our planet. In appreciation, we offer you a powerful tool to help further your efforts. You may use and teach it to address the source of most of our destructive ways.

We recognize that you have an important advanced consciousness if you understand the value of our nature-connected application of ecopsychology.  We are committed to supporting and empowering the much needed way that you think and feel.

"A drunk one night lost his watch in the middle of a city block; he never found it because he searched for it at the street corner where the light was much brighter."

In industrial society, isn't the light we see misleading us?  Do we even know what we are really looking for?

"Most of our populace and all of our leaders ARE PARTICIPATING IN A MASS HALLUCINATORY FANTASY in which:

        * the megatons of waste we dump in our rivers and bays are not poisoning the water, our body or our spirit.

        * the hydrocarbons we pump into the air are not changing the climate of the world or deteriorating our health.

        * over-fishing is not depleting the oceans, over-consumption does not hurt the environment.

         * living estranged from the perfection of nature's grace and self-correcting powers does not reduce our resilience or result in dysfunctions

        * fossil fuels will never run out and our fossilized thinking does not produce our excessiveness, abusiveness and greed.

        * our senses and feelings are not an important part of the way our natural systems work.

        * wars that kill masses of civilians are an appropriate way to keep our hands on what's left,

        * we are not desperately overdrawn at the environmental or emotional bank,  we are not prejudiced against nature,

        * sensory activities that connect our thinking to nature's healing ways don't help us increase our well being,

        * and really, although by the age of seven our kids bond to this mass hallucination and need to be drugged, they are all right."

    - Barbara Kingsolver. (edited)

The reason we continue to suffer our most pressing problems is because, like a drunk, our thinking is disturbed.  Industrial Society won't admit that it is prejudiced against nature. For this reason, because we think that the way we think is "normal," we can't find the irresponsible parts of psychology and education that cause our personal and environmental troubles. They have recently been identified; we must now address them.

The fact is that we inherit from nature the ability to sense the color of a flower, the grandeur of a mountain or the invigorating scent of a fresh breeze. Like the self-evident fact that you are reading these words at this very moment, when in a natural area, backyard to backcountry, each of these sensibilities is also a self-evident experience that we own, a unique and absolute truth about our personal life in conjunction with nature and all of life on Earth. The only "spin" on this truth is the lasting, life-supportive rotation of Earth on its axis.

Nobody can take a self-evident truth away from us because it is real. It has expressed itself. It has happened and registered in our consciousness.  It is a trustable fact, one that our sense of reason can consider. Each accurate fact helps us think more clearly. Each enables us to more effectively find new ways to increase personal, social and environmental well-being.  This explains why even a short walk in the park "clears our head" and temporarily renews us.  Too often, we learn to take the significance of this experience for granted.

There is no doubt that our thinking improves when what we register emanates from direct sensory contact with nature itself in a natural area. This is because nature is the fountainhead of authority about its perfection, about how it has worked over the eons, about how it has produced life on Earth in optimums of cooperation diversity and well being without producing any garbage or our many disorders. As part of nature we inherit this ability, but we learn to disconnect from it.   Organic Psychology enables you to make genuine sensory contact with natural systems and have your thinking and feeling benefit from their restorative ways and wisdom

Do you recognize that our human body contains ten times more cells of other organisms than human cells? Over 115 different species, alone, live on, and help maintain, our skin.  More than half our body weight is that of the non-human cells of "foreign organisms."

Are you one of the few who is aware that every five to seven years, almost every molecule in our body is replaced by a molecule from the environment, and vice versa? We become the environment, it becomes us. This is because humanity is part of the nature's web of life, the global ecosystem, and it is part of us.

Here's what Industrial Society usually forgets to teach us: In order to be part of the global ecosystem, or any system, our thinking must somehow be in communication with the system.  Without some form of inter-communication, we detrimentally trespass the system and it, us.  This creates many disorders in us and the natural environment.

Since we are part of the perfection on nature's global ecosystem, it means that, inherently, we are in communication with the global ecosystem, that somehow its renewing way speaks to us.  Have you ever experienced that communication, do you know how and why it happens?

Industrial Society's well-kept secret is that the global ecosystem communicates with us, as part of itself, through at least 53 natural senses and sensitivities. For example, the sense of thirst intelligently turns on to tell our awareness that we need water. In addition, it intelligently turns off when we have enough water. At least 52 additional natural senses and sensitivities sensibly provide us with similar information. These include our natural attraction senses of community, gravity, reason and trust; smell, place, consciousness and color; balance, motion, belonging and sound.

Each one of our 53 sensibilities is a self-evident basic love-of-life experience that we own, a unique and absolute truth about our life in conjunction with the nature and life on Earth. However, Industrial Society socializes us to think and relate with only 15 percent of our natural attraction sensitivities.  The loss of 85% of our ability to make sense explains why we think up our non-sense and suffer accordingly.

Are you one of the few who realize that the hidden origin of our runaway disorders is Industrial Society's refusal to help our multiple natural attraction senses connect with their nurturing origins in nature? This supportive connection gives our mind the means think and act while in genuine sensory contact with the healing grace of nature's self-correcting peace, balance and beauty. It explains why a walk in the park clears our mind.

The brutal truth is that we suffer our greatest troubles because, on average, Industrial Society's prejudice against nature has taught us to disconnect over 98 percent of our time, thinking and feeling from nature's renewing and supportive ways.  This isolates our psyche and thoughts from the balance and beauty of how nature works.  It stops the flow of natural attractions from recycling the garbage or pollution too often found in our psyche or thinking.

Being severely disconnected from nature's restorative benefits and rewards distorts how we think and feel.  With these vital and rewarding contributions missing in our lives, we want, and when we want there is never enough.  Our unfulfilled wants underlie our greed, abusiveness, excessiveness and disorders.

Our excessive disconnection from the web of life is the problem.  Reasonably learning and teaching how to authentically reconnect our psyche with the web of life is the solution.  The familiarity it produces is the best remedy for our unreasonable prejudice against nature and is a powerful way to increase personal, social and environmental well-being. At our globally significant exploration article (http://www.ecopsych.com/ksanity.html) we scientifically validate this observation.  We empower you to help make this remedy happen via our on-line <http://www.ecopsych.com/orient.html>Orientation Course and additional on-line courses and degrees that follow it.

We are not alone in our nature-connected program. Echoing advanced thinkers throughout history, Psychologist Stephen Aizenstat has noted that,

"Human behavior is rooted most deeply in nature's intentions and desire. The rhythms of nature underlie all of human interaction: religious traditions, economic systems, cultural and political organization. When these human forms betray the natural psychic pulse, people and societies get sick, nature is exploited and entire species are threatened."

"We are dysfunctional socially and environmentally because we are cut off and isolated from the world of nature and the natural."

        - Albert Gore,
        Vice President, USA
        Author, Earth in the Balance

"What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another."

        - Mahatma Gandhi

By strengthening your natural values, hopes and dreams, you can provide extraordinary leadership and guidance to yourself and your community in a good way. To enable yourself in this regard, and to increase the public's trust in you, we urge you to use Organic Psychology as a tool to help reverse our dilemmas. To this end, we offer you the dedicated efforts and beneficial tools of Organic Psychology in our Orientation Course. It is the beginning of a healing process that enhances human services and wellness in the industrial world. It helps caring individuals help their community to live in reasonable balance with people, habitats and the web of life.

If all this seems questionable to you, think of at least one good experience that you have had in nature, backyard or backcountry; mountain, forest or field; brook, ocean or shoreline, pet, garden or aquarium. Try to remember colors, sounds, aromas, textures or flavors that might have been part of the experience. Did the experience contain comforting motions or attractive feelings of community, trust or place?  Did you feel it was enchanting, self-enhancing or spiritually pleasing? Was it supportive, peaceful or both? Did it help you feel renewed or purified, or that you were part of a greater whole or being?  These are some of the results that many individuals have reported from remembering their attractive experiences in nature, experiences they would welcome repeating.  Many individuals have also conveyed that they did not need a teacher, class or book to teach them to have an attractive nature experience; its qualities seemed to be innate, some could remember wonderful experiences from early childhood.

If you have had a good experience in nature, doesn't it tend to confirm the things that this page has suggested?  Isn't Project NatureConnect a worthwhile tool to add to your personal or professional life?

NINE BASICS of the NATURAL SYSTEMS THINKING PROCESS

To help people solve the personal, social and environmental problems that result from the difference between the nature-disconnected way we learn to think and how nature works.

Rationale:
The heart of our unsolvable problems is psychological. We are in denial. We deny that we are addicted to a prejudiced against nature story that says for us to live we must excessively conquer, exploit and subdue nature, including our inherent human nature. Every other part of nature survives in balance through attractions that unite build and sustain consensual, mutually supportive relationships. NSTP enables us to think and act this way by identifying and addressing our prejudice, denial and addiction.

1). Nature can be seen as a unifying attraction process that holds the world together.  Nature organizes, preserves and regenerates itself to produce an optimum of life, diversity and balanced cooperation without producing garbage, madness or death as we know it. Nature's way of expressing love prohibits the pollution, abusiveness and stress that deteriorate life.

2). We are born part of and attached to nature but learn to spend 99.9% of our conscious time and thought detached/disconnected from nature. Our psyche is dismembered from its origins. It silently suffers its profound loss of contact with its nurturing sensory and sensibility roots in nature's ways and intelligence. However, any word or incident that reminds us of our psychological dismemberment breaks the silence. It triggers the emotional pain of it into consciousness and we feel it. As reflected by the state of the world, indoors or outdoors, our mentality is guarded, stressed, ill, wanting and destructive due to our painful deficiency of nature's peace, wisdom, and beauty (10, 16F).

3). When we provide material, social, or financial rewards for nature-disconnecting stories and technologies, we become psychologically bonded to them and their destructive effects. Things that experience these effects suffer.

4).The web of life is a global ecosystem of which people are part. To be part of a system one must in some way be in communication with the system. The Natural Systems Thinking Process enables a person to restore their inherent 53-sense ability to consciously register, enjoy, and respond to communication with nature. It accomplishes this by helping us bring into our awareness the webstring attraction loves that we share with the web of life and make sensory contact with them in nature, backyard or backcountry.

5). People experience webstrings as sensory attractions, uncomfortable sensations are webstrings that attract us to seek additional webstrings and continue to participate.

6). Attractiveness is conscious of itself. When people think in consent and connection with webstrings they experience an attractive global consciousness that leads to unity at every level of endeavor.

7). There is an age old purpose and non-verbal process that sustains nature's web of life and its members, including people. That attractive purpose and process is to support life in balance. In this regard there are no known substitutes for the real thing. People must connect with genuine nature or suffer from the imperfections of the substitutes we create for it.

Since in this model there is no substitute for the real thing, if a person is not in conscious connection with webstring attractions, they are probably playing God in some way without the wisdom to do so.

8). Because we are nature renegades, to reconnect with nature, relationships must be entered by gaining consent and measured by their long term effects on global life in balance.

9). To reverse our imbalance and its discontents, continuing, thoughtful, shared, sensory contacts with webstring attractions in natural areas reconnect our thinking with nature's ways. This produces more sensitive and responsible personal, social and environmental relationships. A person can learn to trust and use nature connected experiences to help produce unity and balance.

A REMARKABLE ARTICLE

For far to long we have been stalled at stupid due to the lack of a tool that we need to help us to reasonably increase well being at every level.  This profound Ph.D. article/dissertation offers that tool. It has been professionally reviewed and successfully defended as legitimate and effective. It describes the readily available key components to sustaining well-being that Industrial Society socializes us to omit from our lives.  It offers a tested, immediately applicable solution for the seldom recognized dysfunction that underlies most disorders that we suffer.

In industrial society our excessively nature-separated lives mold us to betray the natural psychic pulse. We learn to block from our thinking over 98 percent of the wise sensory callings and fulfillments we normally share with natural systems and their eons of experience. Our subconscious hurt and frustration from the severed disconnection of these senses underlies our greatest troubles.
